Vientiane to Bangkok Train: Khamsavath, Tickets & Transfers

Khamsavath is separate from Vientiane Railway Station on the Laos–China Railway. If arriving from Luang Prabang or Vang Vieng, plan a road transfer before the Thailand-bound train.

1. Check the whole route, not just a city name
The Tourism Authority of Thailand’s 14 July 2024 announcement described Rapid 134 from Khamsavath to Krung Thep Aphiwat in Bangkok. This establishes the route’s background, not today’s timetable or seat availability. Use SRT D-Ticket or a designated railway counter to check the service currently sold for your date. If a result involves Nong Khai or another connection, confirm whether it is one through booking or separate tickets, who handles the transfer and what happens if the first leg is late.
2. Reach the correct Vientiane station
Give the driver the full station name, Khamsavath, and check it against your issued itinerary. A Laos–China Railway arrival from northern Laos does not put you at the Thailand-bound departure station. Include station exit, finding the driver, loading bags and the road journey, then allow time for the departure checks specified by the operator. Avoid a tight same-day connection; an overnight stop can be more practical if missing the onward service would disrupt the trip.
3. Compare the ticket and sleeper actually offered
Check the departure date, arrival date, exact stations, class or berth, passenger count and total payable fare. An overnight journey may arrive on a different calendar date. Do not assume every service offers every sleeper type. Read the seller’s collection or presentation instructions and cancellation terms before paying. Payment confirmation or an advance request is not an issued railway ticket; verify the confirmed train and passenger details once ticketing is complete.
4. Prepare for entry to Thailand
Carry the original passport used for the booking and check the current Thai visa or exemption conditions and arrival requirements for your nationality and journey. A Lao visa or Lao eVisa does not authorize entry to Thailand. Use the official Thai eVisa and Immigration arrival-card services for their applicable rules; avoid assuming that an old travel report settles today’s requirements. Keep the issued ticket, accommodation details and any required entry documents accessible, and follow railway and border staff instructions.
5. Plan your arrival in Bangkok
Use the arrival station on the ticket when booking a hotel transfer or onward journey. If it is Krung Thep Aphiwat, plan onward transport from that station rather than from Hua Lamphong. Leave room for train delays, station exit and the journey to an airport or another terminal before a fixed flight or tour. Keep the hotel address and transfer contact offline. For a later return to Laos, plan the reverse journey and Lao entry documents separately.
