Khamsavath Railway Station Guide: Vientiane–Thailand Trains

Khamsavath Railway Station is Vientiane’s station for the conventional railway and Thailand-facing passenger services. It is not the Vientiane Railway Station used by the Laos-China Railway. Travelers connecting between the two railway systems should plan a separate road transfer.
Which trains use Khamsavath?
Khamsavath is associated with conventional services across the Laos–Thailand rail connection. Use the live booking result and current operator guidance for the train, border procedure and ticket available on the intended date.
For broader Laos rail planning, read the Laos-China Railway guide, which explains how the two railway systems fit into a visitor itinerary.
Khamsavath versus Vientiane Railway Station
- Khamsavath serves conventional Thailand-facing trains.
- Vientiane Railway Station serves the Laos-China Railway toward Vang Vieng, Luang Prabang and northern Laos.
- The stations are in different locations and require a road transfer if an itinerary uses both.
Use the Vientiane Railway Station guide for services toward Vang Vieng and Luang Prabang.
International travel preparation
Carry the passport and any visa or entry documents required for the journey. Border and immigration rules can change, and a train ticket does not replace permission to enter a country. Follow the latest official guidance and the instructions issued with the booking.
Transfers and connections
Do not book a tight connection between Khamsavath and a Laos-China Railway departure. Include immigration, possible timetable changes, baggage handling and the road transfer across Vientiane.
Tickets and same-day connections
Check the current train and border instructions for the intended date. Enter passenger information exactly as required and keep the passport, booking confirmation and any issued ticket documents accessible throughout the journey.
When connecting toward northern Laos, search the onward route separately. Popular choices include Vientiane to Vang Vieng and Vientiane to Luang Prabang, but both depart from Vientiane Railway Station rather than Khamsavath.
Treat a same-day international-to-domestic connection conservatively. Immigration, train delays and the road transfer can all affect the available margin. If missing the onward train would materially disrupt the trip, use a longer buffer or separate the journeys.
Official border and station references
Reviewed on 11 October 2026. The Tourism Authority of Thailand announcement identifies the Bangkok–Khamsavath connection. Use current operator information for the actual timetable. The official Lao eVisa entry-port list includes Khamsavath Railway Station. If you need an eVisa, check nationality eligibility and the current conditions, and bring the printed approval letter with the passport used to apply. Do not confuse rail and road border checkpoints.
