Laos eVisa Photo and Passport Uploads: Avoid Common Errors

Cover: Laos railway travel. Illustrative archive image; not a visa document or a checkpoint identification guide.

The Laos eVisa photo requirements cover the portrait and the passport scan. For a Laos eVisa application, prepare two separate images: a recent 4 × 6 cm colour portrait and a clear colour copy of the complete passport biodata page, including the MRZ. Check them before submitting. The official FAQ describes the portrait requirements; the official information page explains the full-page passport requirement. This checklist helps identify avoidable problems; it does not predict approval.

This is independent LaosTrain guidance, not an official government website. The official photo and document rules are published on the Lao eVisa portal at laoevisa.gov.la/info and in the official laoevisa.gov.la/faq. Where this article adds shooting and cropping advice, it is labelled as a practical tip — it is not a rule, and it is not an approval guarantee. We do not recommend altering, retouching or fabricating any identity document or facial feature, and additional documents may be requested at any stage. Final admission to Laos is always decided by immigration officers at the border.

Laos eVisa photo requirements: the official rules

According to the official eVisa information page (laoevisa.gov.la/info), the applicant photo must be:

  • 4 x 6 cm in colour.
  • Taken within the last 6 months — recent enough to reflect your current appearance.
  • Taken against a white background.
  • Free of shadows on the face or the background.
  • Front facing, with a neutral expression and eyes open.

The table below separates official photo criteria from practical image-quality checks. The FAQ does not give a pixel count or upload-size limit in the material reviewed here. Follow the format and size instructions in the live upload form you actually use; do not transfer LaosTrain upload limits to the government portal.

Photo checks before uploading

Check the image before uploading. The table’s “Check again” column identifies issues to correct or clarify, rather than claiming that every listed issue produces an automatic rejection.

Shooting to 4 x 6 cm: practical tips

These are practical shooting notes, not official specifications. Stand roughly one to two metres from a plain white wall, and place the camera at eye level. Use diffuse daylight from a window in front of you, or two light sources angled from the front left and front right — lighting from one side alone is what creates the shadow the official rules reject. Avoid direct on-camera flash, which produces shiny hotspots on the forehead and nose and can cause glare in spectacle lenses.

Practical tip: inspect the image at full size for reflections over the eyes and use softer light if needed. Follow any additional guidance in the current official photo example or application form; do not alter your facial features to repair an unsuitable portrait.

Passport bio page: upload the full MRZ

The official information page requires the whole passport bio page, including the MRZ—the two machine-readable lines at the bottom. Make sure both lines remain readable and inside the image. Do not crop the upload down to the portrait or name alone.

Passport scan checks before uploading

  • All four corners of the bio page visible. Do not crop to the photo or the name block alone.
  • Both MRZ lines fully inside the frame, with a small margin below the last line, and no shadow cutting across them.
  • Glare-free. Glossy laminate reflects overhead light; take the page out from under direct lamps and shoot from directly above, or use diffused daylight.
  • Sharp and readable. Practical tip: place the passport flat on a dark surface, hold the camera parallel to the page and tap to focus on the text lines.
  • The same passport you will travel with. The passport used to apply must be the passport presented on arrival; a renewed or replaced passport means the details no longer match.
  • Validity check first. The official FAQ requires an ordinary passport valid for more than 180 days from arrival. If your passport does not meet that condition, renew it before applying.

Do not edit the scan to "clean up" text, remove a crease or rebuild a character. If the page is damaged or unreadable, the practical route is to contact the passport authority that issued it — not to modify the image.

Pre-submit checklist

  1. Photo is colour, 4 x 6 cm proportions, taken in the last 6 months.
  2. Background is plain white with no shadow on the face or behind the head.
  3. Head is front facing, expression neutral, eyes open and visible, no glare.
  4. Passport bio page shows all four corners and both MRZ lines in full.
  5. Passport is valid more than 180 days from arrival and matches the details entered.
  6. Every traveller who needs a visa has their own application details — each visa-required child needs an individual application. Check whether any exemption applies to your nationality via the official eligibility page official eligibility guidance rather than assuming.
  7. You have read the current fee on the official fee calculator and understand the official fee is non-refundable.

Timeline and what happens after upload

The official estimate is usually 3 working days after a complete application and payment, subject to acceptance by the authorities; additional checks or corrections can take longer. Apply within the timing window described in the official FAQ and leave a buffer for corrections.

Track progress with your application ID and passport number at laoevisa.gov.la/checkstatus. If your card was charged but the status shows Unpaid, contact official support through laoevisa.gov.la/contact without paying again. Note that official support assists applications made on the official portal; if you applied through LaosTrain, contact LaosTrain through your order instead.

When approved, check the letter against your passport and print a legible copy, including the QR code, as required by the official FAQ. Use our entry-port guide to check the border and the requirements page for the broader application checklist.

Next step

Check both files at full size, compare your entered details with the passport, and review the live form’s upload instructions. When ready, you can apply directly through the official portal or use our independent Laos eVisa service. Information reviewed on 15 October 2026.
