2024 Archive: Thailand–Laos Railway Trial Operations

Historical archive: this article concerns reporting in 2024, not an upcoming trial operation. The original report described proposed trial operations on 13–14 July 2024 ahead of the Bangkok–Vientiane (Khamsavath) passenger service launch.

For the subsequent launch announcement, see the 2024 Bangkok–Vientiane service report. Use the current Bangkok–Laos train guide to plan a new journey and check the operator's present timetable for your travel date.

A connection between separate railway systems

Thailand-facing conventional trains use Khamsavath station. Northbound Laos–China Railway journeys use a different Vientiane Railway Station. Passengers connecting between them need a road transfer, time for applicable border checks and a separately confirmed onward journey. This historic trial report does not establish a direct Bangkok–Beijing passenger service or a through ticket across the two systems.

Check the Khamsavath station guide and the Vientiane Railway Station guide before arranging transport. A train booking does not confirm immigration eligibility.
